Situated in the Roero hills, a land of “rocche”, vineyards and castles, the city of Bra is a crossroads of history, food and wine excellence and culture. Of ancient origins, it has roots that sink into the Neolithic age and that touch the Roman Empire and the Savoy dynasty, whose traces are still clearly visible in the territory. Today it is a city of almost 30 thousand inhabitants, famous in Italy and in the world for being the home of the Slow Food movement, for its excellent sausage, for its international opening events and for being one of the cradles of Piedmontese Baroque.
Walking through its streets and discovering its squares, you will admire the rounded façade of the Palazzo Comunale, the church of Santa Chiara, a masterpiece by the royal architect Bernardo Antonio Vittone, the church of the Trinità, also known as the “Battuti Bianchi”. And then, the museums of Natural History, Art and Archaeology and Toy and the central Via Cavour, a meeting place, with cafés and historic venues, where the writer Giovanni Arpino also used to spend his days. Without forgetting the Zizzola, a symbolic building of the city that, from the top of the Monteguglielmo hill, observes everything. And then, there is Pollenzo, its best-known hamlet, whose square overlooks an architectural complex of buildings that recall the ancient glories of one of the private residences of the royal family. Pollenzo is one of the Savoy Residences declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Inside these ancient premises, for some years the University of Gastronomic Sciences has involved students from all over the world in its courses, while the characteristic tower that stands out in the square hosts an original Wine Bank, where some of the most famous Italian crus are kept and aged.
Bra is also a land of good food and excellent wines, with excellences known and appreciated even beyond national borders. Who has never heard of the famous Bra sausage, a veal sausage to be enjoyed raw and authorized directly by the House of Savoy? Not to mention the cheese, which bears the name of the city itself: Bra Dop – soft and hard -, a delight for the palate and the senses, celebrated together with cheeses from all over the world with the international event “Cheese! The shapes of milk”. And, again, the fresh products of the gardens, the bread… to finish with a “local and slow” sandwich, the Mac ‘d Bra, which contains all the flavors of the territory in a single bite.
